Overview
Flat Top Ranch is a private family ranch compound thoughtfully organized around a collection of residences, guest casitas, and shared gathering spaces. Connected by a series of covered walkways and a central pedestrian spine, the compound encourages movement between buildings while preserving privacy for individual family members and guests. Native limestone, dark metal cladding, expansive glazing, and generous roof overhangs establish a refined architectural language that feels unified across the property while remaining rooted in the surrounding Texas landscape.
A Connected Ranch Compound
Rather than functioning as a single residence, the ranch was conceived as a collection of buildings that support generations of family gatherings. Individual homes and guest casitas are carefully positioned along a central pathway, allowing each structure to maintain its own identity while remaining connected through covered walkways and shared outdoor spaces. This village-like arrangement encourages everyday interaction while providing flexibility as the family grows over time.
Framing the Landscape
The heart of the compound is a generous great room oriented toward sweeping views of Flat Top Mountain and the private lake beyond. Expansive glazing, covered porches, outdoor cooking areas, and open-air dining spaces extend daily living into the landscape, allowing the architecture to serve as a quiet backdrop to family life, recreation, and the changing beauty of the ranch throughout the seasons.
A Connection to the Land
Fossilized dinosaur footprints discovered on the ranch years before construction were carefully preserved and incorporated into the architecture, allowing the history of the land to become part of the everyday experience of the home. These remarkable artifacts establish a tangible connection between the ranch's ancient past and its present, reinforcing the belief that meaningful architecture should respond not only to its surroundings, but also to the stories embedded within the landscape.
