Located along the Brazos River, Rio Libros is a destination where architecture, literature, music, education, and the landscape come together to create a memorable retreat. The project includes a riverside library, overnight accommodations, camping areas, covered outdoor classrooms, and a small concert venue, encouraging visitors to slow down, reconnect with nature, and share meaningful experiences together. Carefully integrated into its riverfront setting, the retreat is designed to celebrate reading, learning, gathering, and exploring the outdoors.
A Place to Learn & Gather
Rio Libros is designed as a destination where education and community naturally intersect. A riverside library serves as the heart of the retreat, complemented by covered outdoor classrooms featuring built-in desks that provide comfortable spaces for workshops, lectures, environmental education, and creative exploration. An intimate concert venue, overnight accommodations, and camping areas further enrich the experience, creating opportunities for storytelling, music, conversation, and lifelong learning within the landscape.
The Library Walk
The library serves as the intellectual heart of Rio Libros, where architecture encourages both discovery and reflection. A long gallery lined with steel bookshelves creates a quiet procession through the collection, terminating with expansive glazing at each end that frames views of the surrounding landscape and fills the interior with natural light. Along one side, a substantial stone wall anchors the building with a sense of permanence, punctuated by carefully placed colored glass openings that cast changing patterns of light throughout the day. A reading area extends to a covered porch with built-in desks, creating an outdoor classroom where reading, writing, and conversation remain closely connected to the Brazos River and the surrounding landscape.
Along the Brazos
The retreat is thoughtfully positioned to embrace the character of the Brazos River and its surrounding landscape. Buildings, gathering spaces, and outdoor amenities are carefully integrated into the site to preserve its natural beauty while encouraging exploration and connection with nature. Walking paths, camping areas, and outdoor classrooms extend the experience beyond the buildings, allowing the landscape itself to become an essential part of learning, recreation, and daily life.
