Overview
Perched above the shoreline of Lake Granbury, Trail Edge House is a contemporary waterfront residence shaped by a narrow homesite, steep topography, and expansive views of the lake. Rather than resisting the challenges of the landscape, the design embraces them, stepping with the terrain to create a home that feels naturally rooted within its setting.
The home's organization responds directly to the site's constraints, balancing privacy from neighboring properties with unobstructed views toward the water. Interior spaces extend naturally to terraces and outdoor living areas, allowing the architecture to blur the boundary between indoors and out while maximizing daylight, natural ventilation, and a strong connection to the landscape.
Carefully integrated into the hillside, the home follows the natural contours of the land rather than working against them. The result is a residence that feels settled within its landscape, creating a quiet and lasting connection to Lake Granbury.
Responding to the Site
The steep hillside and limited building envelope became the defining influence on the design. Rather than reshaping the landscape, the home follows the site's natural contours, minimizing disturbance while creating a sequence of spaces that gradually reveal views of Lake Granbury. Careful placement of the structure, terraces, and retaining elements allows the architecture to feel integrated with the terrain.
Indoor–Outdoor Living
Designed for lakeside living, the home extends beyond its walls through covered terraces, generous outdoor gathering spaces, and expansive glazing that frames the surrounding landscape. Natural light, ventilation, and uninterrupted views reinforce the connection between the interior and the outdoors, creating spaces that are equally suited for everyday living and entertaining.
Connection to Place
Every design decision was guided by the character of the site—from its steep topography and mature trees to its expansive lake views. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the home seeks to belong to it, creating a lasting relationship between architecture, land, and water.
